I Reinhart Stelters gode bog om coaching formuleres der otte teser der kan danne et fundament for arbejdet med coaching. Disse er relevante, synes jeg, da de siger meget om hvad coaching egentlig er. Coaching er en spørgeteknik, men det bygger på et meget fremtrædende menneskesyn og værdigrundlag, hvilket jeg synes de otte teser giver en god beskrivelse af:
- Vi gør hver især det, der bedst giver mening for os
Dette betyder at coachen må anlægge et anerkendende perspektiv, hvor han anerkender den coachedes udfordring (altså den "sag" der skal løses i coachingen), og måden denne angriber sin udfordring på.
2. Vi opfatter verden ud fra det billede, vi har af verden
Det billede vi har af verden danner vi hver især ud fra vores erfaringer for forforståelser. Der er således ikke nogen objektiv virkelighed, men subjektive forståelser af hvordan tingene hænger sammen. Her er det vigtigt at coachen accepterer den coachedes virkelighed, og ikke prøver at trække sin egen opfattelse af virkeligheden ned over hovedet på den coachede. (Her er det at man ser den tydelige kontruktivistiske påvirkning på coaching-konceptet)
3. Den, der har problemet, ejer også nøglen til dets løsning
Hele hensigten med coaching er at øge den coachedes bevidsthed, gøre vedkommende ansvarlig og udvikle handlemuligheder sammen med vedkommende. Coachen skal ikke komme med løsninger, da den coachede gerne skulle blive i stand til at bruge sin øgede indsigt og bevidsthed fra coachingen i forhold til løsningen af andre opgaver senere.
4. Problemer er problemer, fordi vi opfatter dem som problemer
Det er den coachedes måde at forholde sig til udfordringen, som er i fokus i en coachingsituation. Hvordan den coachede angriber og tænker om sin udfordring påvirker løsningen af opgaven.
5. Problemer udfolder sig i relationer mellem mennesker
Dette betyder at hvor der er flere mennesker samlet, vil der sandsynligvis være flere forskellige opfattelser af situationen. At prøve at forstå disse forskellige forholdemåder til en situation eller et problem, vil være vigtigt for at kunne handle i situationen. Coachen skal derfor søge at få belyst de forskellige interesser, relationer og opfattelser der kan versere i en sag.
6. Problemer er midlertidige
Coachens opgave er i mange tilfælde at præsentere nye perspektiver overfor den coachede, hvor personen er gået i stå, fx ved at finde forskelle i den måde problemet opfattes på. Det er en grundlæggende antagelse i coaching at det gælder om at se muligheder og positive forestillinger om fremtiden.
7. Adskillelse mellem person og problem er en forudsætning for at erkende og handle
Den coachede selv kan være af den opfattelse at han er blevet ét med problemet. Coachens rolle er her at prøve at adskille de to. Hensigten er at gøre den coachede i stand til at handle, og her gælder det om at ikke lade den coachede se sig selv som et offer for sit problem.
8. Vi behøver ikke at kende et problems årsag for at kunne løse eller håndtere det
I coaching vælger man at se på udfordringerne i et cirkulært perspektiv, frem for et lineært perspektiv, som man ofte gør i psykologien. Man er med andre ord ikke så optaget af hvad der ligge forud, eller hvad årsdagen til problemet kan være. I coachingen fokuseres der på mønstre i relationer, adfærd og måden vi forholder os til ting på. Denne form for tænkning er igen med til at bringe fokus på fremtid og muligheder, frem for fortidens syndebukke. På denne måde vil en coach ofte bruge spørgeordene "havordan" og "hvad", frem for "hvorfor", der retter fokus bagud.
