I tidsskriftet "Erhvervspsykologi", nr. 4, dec. 2005, vil Line Halborg vise hvordan systemisk coaching og NLP coaching adskiller sig fra hinanden. Som repræsentant for NLPcoaching bruger hun Sofia Manning, og den systemiske retning repræsenteres ved. Bl.a. Gitte Haslebo, Peter Skovmoes Hansen og Gert Rosenkvist. Der skal også lige nævnes at Line Halborg selv arbejder ud fra den systemiske tankegang. Artikkelen bringer klarhed i et ret uoverskueligt område, hvor der er meget svært for en udenforstående at skelne mellem de forskellige coach tilbuds teoretiske ståsted, og tage dette med i vurderingen inden man går i gang med et coaching forløb hos en coach eller en uddannelse. Selv har jeg, via min tidligere uddannelse, bevæget mig meget inden for den systemiske og socialkostruktivistiske retning, og da jeg skulle i gang med en coach-uddannelse faldt valget på Manning Inspires uddannelse, da den for mig at se var til en vis grad systemisk funderet, og i øvrigt grundig og omfattende sammenlignet med andre tilbud. At flere af Manning Inspires undervisere havde en NLP-baggrund var jeg bekendt med, men NLP bliver ikke nævnt i forbindelse med beskrivelsen af uddannelsen.
Halborgs fremlæggelse af NLP coaching baserer sig stort set på Sofia Mannings bestseller "Coaching - kunsten at stille de rigtige spørgsmål". Det er også her Manning præsenterer sin coaching model med de 6 trin, og gør rede for sin tilgang til coaching. Men efter min mening bliver en fremlæggelse af NLP coaching baseret på denne bog lidt tynd. Bogen er, synes jeg, sådan lidt "hverken fugl eller fisk". Den kan give et hurtigt indblik i Mannings metoder, men hvis man selv tror at man er klar til at coache andre når man har læst bogen, tager man fejl. Her er til gengæld Mannings coach-uddannelse et godt fundament, hvis man vil arbejde med coaching. Da Halborg åbenbart ikke har deltaget i et Manning forløb, bliver hendes argumnetation derfor lidt mangelfuld. Primært fordi Halborgs artikkel handler om coaching i organisationer, og præsentationen i Mannings bog, er med henblik på life-coaching. Manning skelner nemlig mellem life- og business coaching - men det ved man ikke meget om med mindre man har fulgt hendes uddannelse. Hendes metode og fremgangsmåde med de 6 trin, som hun strukturerer en session efter, er stort set den samme, hvad enten det drejer sig om life- eller business coaching. Men Halborg vægter i sin artikkel Mannings mål om at udvikle menneskers fulde potentiale eller at det er i individets kerne man finder nøglen til forandring. Problemet er bare at når det kommer til business coaching, spiller følelser ikke nogen særlig rolle hos Manning. Det kan være svært helt at komme uden om dem, men man vil i en business coach situation ikke grave i det, som man vil i en life coach session. Når det kommer til business coaching har Manning en erkendelse af at målet ofte er sat på forhånd, fx fra virksomhedens ledelse, og at det det hele ofte ender med, er noget der har men enten penge eller tid at gøre. Målet er således oftest langt mere fysisk end i life coaching, hvor målet ofte er noget mentalt, eller en følelse. Derfor bliver hele Halborgs brug af Mannings bog som basis for en diskussion om coaching i organisationer, lidt mangelfuld; sessionens struktur er altså den samme, men det her med at grave efter potentiale og følelser fylder ikke ret meget i en business-coaching session.
Et andet kritikpunkt i artikkelen, er at jeg mener Halborg skøjter lidt let over Mannings coaching model - altså den strategi hun gennemfører sine sessioner efter. Halborg konstaterer blot at Mannings 6 trin modsvarer meget godt "visdommens fire søjler" i NLP. Hun glemmer derfor i sin fremstilling de to sidste trin i Mannings model - nemlig det 5. trin, nyt alternativ, der handler om hvad man helt konkret skal foretage sig nu for at få løst sit problem, og det 6. trin, afslutningen, hvor man bl.a. opsummerer sessionens udbytte, indgår aftaler og repeterer hvad der nu skal ske.
Helt grundlæggende i Mannings coaching er det at være specifik. I Halborgs fremstilling lyder det sådan lidt alternativt - at man skal finde frem til kernen i problemet (der er forskel på individets kerne og problemets kerne). Men når man kender Mannings måde at coache på, ved man at det det virkelig handler om er at finde ud af hvad der egentlig er det relle problem, eller udfordring. Det vil sige at man hele tiden, gennem hele sessionen - altså uanset hvilket af trinnene man befinder sig på og om det nu er life eller business coaching det drejer sig om - skal være så specifik som overhovedet muligt og få defineret og kvantificeret så meget som muligt. På den måde sikrer man at coach og fokusperson for det første kan følge hinanden og ikke taler forbi hinanden, og for det andet har jeg selv oplevet at problemet ofte løser sig selv, når man pludselig bliver nødt til at være meget specifik. Vi kender jo problemer der vokser os over hovedet og bliver helt uoverskuelige - i vores tanker - og når det kommer til stykket og vi skal tage stilling til hvor stort problemet egentlig er, så er det ganske overskueligt - og måske slet ikke noget problem. Med andre ord er det her med problemets kerne ikke noget hokus pokus, men faktisk meget jordnært.
Jeg nævnte indledningsvist at jeg, inden jeg startede på Mannings uddannelse, synes den havde mange systemiske træk. Og det synes jeg stadig at den har. En central pointe i den systemiske tænkning er at virkeligheden er socialt konstrueret. Der er med andre ord ingen objektiv virkelighed, men hvert individ har sin egen subjektive virkelighed. Dette er imidlertid også centralt i Mannings coaching, og efter min mening gældende for al coaching, hvad enten man kalder sig NLP coach eller systemisk coach, fordi coaching altid vil være defineret ved at tage udgangspunkt i fokuspersonens version af verden. Coaching vil altid hvile på et socialkonstruktivistisk grundlag, og hvis man som coach ikke har den gundopfattelse at verden er subjektiv, er det ikke coaching vi har med at gøre. Siden der ikke ekststerer nogen objektiv virkelighed, er coachens perspektiv kun et alternativ, eller en mulighed blandt mange, og ikke nogen ekspertudtalelse, hvilket for mig definerer coaching uanset hvilket teoretisk fundament coachen har.
Et andet træk ved systemisk coaching som Halborg fremhæver, er den cirkulære forståelsesform - i modsætning til den lineære der har fokus på årsag - virkning. Det er altså sammenhængene mellem begivenhederne der er i fokus. Dette ses imidlertid også i Mannings måde at coache på. Centralt hos Manning er at få brudt mønstre, dvs. at få knækket hæmmende mønstre og overbevisninger der afholder os i at handle på vores mål. Ifølge Mannings coachingmodel (de 6 trin), er det "officielt" i trin 4 (efter målafklaring, afdækning af forhindringer og motivation), at man bryder disse overbevisninger, eller mønstre, men i virkeligheden vil disse mønsterbrud finde sted hele vejen gennem sessionen, og det er coachens opgave at hive fat i det så snart der er noget i fokuspersonens resonnemænt der ikke lyder logisk, dvs. der skal hele tiden være logik og sammenhæng i fokuspersonens udsagn, og på den måde bliver forståelsesfomen cirkulær.
Som jeg kan se det, og som Halborg også fremhæver, adskiller de to coach retninger sig fra hinanden på ét væsentligt punkt, og det er hvordan man opfatter individet. Inden for den systemiske tradition vil man sige at handlinger ikke har mening i sig selv, men meningen skabes i de relationer som individet indgår i. Det er altså de relationer individet indgår i, der er afgørende, og ikke som sådan individet i sig selv. Manning, derimod, har et stærkt fokus på individet, og hun vil nok sige at det er individet selv der skaber mening. Måske er det fordi Manning, og at NLP-coaching bunder i en selvrealiseringstankegang at gøre, hvor individet søger at blive den bedst mulige udgave af sig selv, og derfor har et større individfokus.
Til forskel fra Mannings coahing model har den systemsike coaching ikke nogen fast model at holde fast i, eller en rækkefølge for hvordan sessionen skal forløbe. Som nybegynder udi coachingens kunst, må jeg indrømme at det kan være betryggende at have en model at holde fast i. Men jeg vil bestemt ikke afvise at det kan blive lidt trivielt i længden, og at behovet for kunstnerisk frihed vil indfinde sig.
Om Mannings metode med de 6 trin, mener jeg at den er god og absolut brugbar i en coaching situation. Der er dog nogle af hendes foreslåede spørgsmål, samt enkelte af de modeller hun anvender i tillæg (som fx trekanten der beskriver folks tilstand - også nævnt i Halborgs artikkel), som jeg nok ikke kommer til at bruge, da jeg kan mærke at det ingen effekt har på mig selv, og jeg vil derfor heller ikke forvente at andre skal få noget ud af det. Nu skal man også være forsigtig med at se for dogmatisk på disse forskellige måder at coache på. Som Sofia selv sagde ved vores uddannelses afslutning, var vi nu blevet præsenteret for en metode og en række værktøjer, og at det nu var vores egen opgave at finde ud af at gøre det lærte til vores. For mit eget vedkommende vil det nok indebære et større fokus på individets relationer.
Halborg har dog også en meget væsnetlig pointe til sidst i sin artikkel, hvor jeg må give hende helt og aldelses ret. Hun påpeger at NLP ikke har noget erkendelsesteoretisk udgangspunkt, og at der mangler henvisninger til videnskabelige undersøgelser i NLP-litteraturen, og således får NLP-coaching et præg af "lommepsykologi". Det er også hvad jeg synes mangler i Mannings måde at coache på; man kan ikke gå et sted henne og finde litteratur og inspiration til situationer hvor man synes man har brug for det. Hvorimod den systemiske tænkning har et erkendelsesteoretisk fundament hvor coachen til enhevr tid kan søge selvrefleksion. En afgørende pointe der kan få mig til at i større grad bevæge mig over i den systemiske tankegang.

min opfattelse af Sofie Mannings (SM) tilgang til coaching er mere systemisk end NLP. her er NLP meget mere fokuseret på at danne feeld og derigennem sanse fokus personen. hvor SM følger en model som så bliver paradigmet og styrende.
